How a thriller creates suspense and drama

Black swan
Within the first scene that we looked that was 22 minutes into the film was looking at the female character achieving the role she desired for which is to be the black swan. However, the sound that was present in the first scene is the high-pitch frequency with replicates the idea of a bell sound. Although, this frequency occurred when the mother reacts to the fact that the daughter wants less cake that her mother has served to celebrate her achievement.  Non-diegetic ticking sound in background represents there is a change in her, ticking time bomb – she will explode at some point, adding tension because we don’t actually know when it’s coming. Although, we are expect it happen in some point through the duration of the film. Sound effects is something that I have access to through free copyright sounds through the internet as well as sounds that are available in the school systems, but is it is more of a complex unique sound I lack resources and access to this, as it just isn’t possible. In my thriller the idea of ticking could be incorporated in recurrence to a particular character, which shows points of aggression or the build up to predictions the audience make but echoing out in order to keep the audience at edge. In contrast, the dialogue consumed in the scene shows the daughter on the phone to her mother but calls her ‘mummy’. This is a very childlike term mainly referred to children but a grown woman calls her mother this. This seems odd for a woman to call her mother this but, adds a slight cringe factor to the scene and gives her mother the power of authority and controlling mannerisms. This creates mystery and suspense as she will be controlling and switch tempers very quickly and sharply against the daughter. I could add this to my scene in order to add a sense of awkwardness through a character or as someone who finds it hard to be socially involved with others. It would be good use of someone who is under the power of another or someone with a mentally detachment for society. Lastly, the props that are used are mirrors throughout the whole apartment shared between the mother and daughter. The idea of having mirrors creates a sense of being consistency watched by her mother and having a lack of personal privacy. Therefore, this creates unanswered questions as to why the mother is so obsessed with her daughter and her seem to be a control freak. I could include a prop such as mirrors; I could use them to watch someone such as if the character was abusing someone or the mirror could be used on someone who is imaged obsessed that is starting to control their lives. Mirrors however also play the role of self-consciousness about herself or self-critical as she is ballet dancer, they are required to be thin, showing that perhaps the mirrors are in place to pressure her and be aware of her figure at all time. Restricting her, in what she eat at home. But, this will defiantly make her uncomfortable in her own home, somewhere, where she should feel safe. This keeps her paranoid in all aspects of her life.

The second scene that I focused on was the celebration of the characters achieving a role in the production of the black swan for which they all go to a party as part of the celebration. However, the mise-en-scene portrays a contrast between the black and the white swan characters, the main character is wearing white and her competition character is wearing black. This displays the variation between the roles but also signifies the characters as who they are. Although one of the characters is more in tune with her sexuality as she stands opening in front of her rival and take off her underwear. These factors create the idea of mystery and suspense as they portray the idea of not knowing the next action of the characters for example it questions the sexuality of the character as she is taking her knickers off in front of a women she barely knows, suggesting she is perhaps sexually interested in the main character. Them wearing black and white foreshadows the idea of negative and positive suggesting no further drama shall happen of the main character reassuring the audience to trust the woman when in fact later she isn’t really to be trusted. By them wearing the positive and negative creates confusion as the director wants to show the rival character as the threat and one to be watched when in fact the main character is the threat to herself and others. Therefore, diverting the audience’s attention away but also giving her a sense of normality compared how she is behaving. In addition, the sound that is presented while the character is in the toilet is of a low frequency to maintain the suspense and drama of what the character is going to do. For which was the character pulling away a whit-low from the finger nail bed, when in fact she take a large piece of the skin when taking the whit low away. However, when we look back at the character we expect blood when in fact the skin still remains on her hand. This portrays that it is a figure of her imagination and create the first line in a long line of things to come, it shows the start of her hallucinations, which we can predict will only increase as the film continues. It could also create the idea of no fear, its a impulsive reaction but a sense of trying to break out of her own skin- feeling trapped within this high-pressure role. the idea of this is very gruesome and gory to see, showing the intention to be a thriller. However, this action also changes the mood of the thriller as one minute she is talking to others and the next she is in the bathroom pulling at a whit low. This drastic change indicts the dramatic change going to happen as the film progresses, it foreshadows the drastic change in her as a person but the psychological effects of her thinking her is a swan. her action replicates her thought and state of mind.  When we are shown this, it is displayed in an over-the shoulder shot of the character but through a mirror. Therefore, portraying the fact that she is watched even by herself, but the low pitch sound appears while this happens. The suspense and drama is shown implying all of these characteristics group together in order to form the important aspects of the character pulling her skin away, it creates unanswered questions as to why she is pulling the skin away but also when we see her skin again it is still there; This show confusion between the audience, and the characters.

Within the third scene that I studied a dramatic loud bang can be heard but not seen, suggesting non-diegetic sound. Along with the sound the lights also go out while she is still rehearsing hard to become the perfect character in the production. As the bang appears in the scene it creates a sense of drama and puts the audience on edge of why the loud sound happened and the lights went out alongside the loud bang. However, in the build-up of the loud bang appearing editing has been incorporated for the idea of the character watching herself dance in the mirrors but once she has stopped dancing her reflection carries on dancing in the glass. This creates the idea of someone watching her  but not just someone herself watching her and hinted that true enemy that she has to battle with is herself rather than anyone who is part of the cast. The drama and tension that is built upon in the scene is the director trying to portray the character as being unstable and never actually knowing her next action or move, making it harder to judge the character and her movements. From a state of realization she visits the old black swan that is in a mental institution as the role also lead her to become mentally unstable. When she visits her she returns all of the original black swan’s items that include earrings. However, the shot eventually replaces the original black swans face with the main characters face adding more CGI to the scene and whole film, it also creates repetition of elements in order to replicate ideas that the swan will eventually change into these things if she doesn’t change or stop what she is doing. This creates tension of how the black swan will eventually be to the end the film and question/ predict the ending of the film. But, replacing her face indicts that she is her own enemy of herself and that is what shall wreck her.

Finally, in the last scene that I studied shows the mental decline in the character as she can’t no longer detect from reality and her stage show. However, the editing that has been used in the scene is the use of CGI of the wings actually appearing in the skin of the character. We are shown the character grown these black wings with a sinister smile on her face. The idea of her growing the wings creates a release of her normal personality and becoming herself as the character. She is showing release but the look that appears on her face shows the fact that she completely different due to the change and the role taking over her body. However, this happens after she has killed her rival character with a piece of glass as she believes she was fighting herself. This also shows a form of CGI with replacing the rivals face with her own, this implies that she uses others as they blame for her enemy when in fact her enemy is in reality herself. The way in which this creates suspense and drama is through making the audience see the final break through with the character actually becoming the swan as real life. The questions begin to appear to the audience of why we can see her as a swan when in fact it is in her head rather than in reality. But also, can she be helped if she has already changed to the black swan. Additionally, the character actually ends up killing her rival which uses a cut to show from the dressing room to the stage, portraying her mood change within the dressing room being aggressive and near the stage calm and collected as well as not letting people know that she has killed someone. Although, she shows a sinister attitude when she is the swan she is free and under less pressure compared to the strain and pressure she feels from others. The tension that is divided is the character having the idea of a split personality disorder, actually creating huge amounts of drama of never known what the character may actually do next. Overall, each aspect that happens increases the drama as her disorder begins to eat away at her as she can no longer cope with the role.

Film opening titles

The 3 film opening titles for which I observed was begin again, Talented Mr Ripley and The hunger games. However, at the beginning of the first opening was ‘Begin again’ which appears to be about a new upcoming artists who are trying to make it in the music industry. However, the way in which the opening sequences begins with having the opening title but more specifically with idents, but in fact the film company decide to include 5 of them. This portrays the companies that have been involved within the making of the film. Although, when they continue with the credits they include production companies’ names that are making the film with a black background and white lettering, created the maximum contrast in colours. In addition, when they begin to actually include the name of the main stars they only occur at the end of the first scene within the film. But only the main characters rather than other characters that maybe involved later on the scene with much smaller roles to play. Furthermore, the title of the film isn’t introduced until the first four minutes of the film have actually been shown. As well as, the director’s name is the finale of the sequence of the opening titles, which states his importance compared to the rest of the film.

However, the film opening of ‘talented Mr Ripley’ introduces ta similar idea of having the companies names who were involved in the making, idents but all of the companies were displayed in the same way of having each company in white writing. Although, the directors name is shown first, showing authority. In addition, when the names of the cast are displayed they are shown through coloured overlays that appear in strip to the side or the bottom of the screen. But, this showcase doesn’t appear until the first 3 minutes of the scene. However, these are continuing to be displayed even though the film is 5 minutes in. But, it is becoming more of a trend that the film titles are being portrayed at the end of the film rather than beginning, therefore the film can start straight away rather than the audience sitting through the titles they now have a chose if they want to don’t want to watch them.

However, The hunger games is much recent film, for which displays the changes more are the opening of their film has only 2 idents at the beginning of the film. For which are portrayed through black and white, as the lettering is white and background laid behind is black, create a bold but subtle statement. It is clear to make the assumption that the titles that display the cast and crew that were involved with the film are shown at the end. This film defiantly shows the modern conventions of films of rolling the credits at the end of the film rather than the beginning. This allows the film to begin without any interference but also allows the film to look like a film rather than a trailer to the film.

Opening of a Thriller

Borne identity
Borne identity is a film for which is based upon a floating body that is found drifting in the sea. A fishing boat crew member throws waste into the sea which he then sees the body and calls upon crew members to help him retrieve the body from the sea, When they then manage to place the body on the deck, his hand moves making it clear to see that the person who this lifeless body is in fact alive. Throwing the crew members off guard; When have established that he is alive they then begin to move his body down to the inside to the boat and move items from the table and replacing them with a unknown males body. The rest of the crew then leave allow the captain to retrieve his medical kit. However, the final shot for which is displayed to the audience is the unknown body being cut across a part of his body by a scalpel.

However, the mise-en- scene that is visible is the costumes that are used throughout each character. The costumes also relate heavily to the sea as they include, yellow waterproof uniforms, worn clothes and wet suits. Therefore, these inflict the feeling of the setting as well as linking successfully to the idea of the type of weather proof wear is worn when out to sea at months on end.  However, the make-up assists this idea as they seem to look, not unclean but scruffy and as if they are limited in resources due to the fact that there isn’t much space to actually store any personal items but more of the basic essentials. This helps add to the effect of them lacking in care of how they look, but also it shows the idea of hard graft and hard-labour for which they may endure as the job for which participate in is very tiring and often tiredness, proceeds in them lacking in appearance as would perhaps rather rest than wash or wear clean clothes. Furthermore, the props that are situated throughout the scene are items with include playing cards, medical equipment and scuba equipment. The playing cards may resemble their only form of entertainment as well as, the lack of any modern technology being able to work from their location. The lack of technical equipment implies that this is done for purpose to display that idea of being secluded and being far from any form of technology, as if high-quality cameras of equipment were used it wouldn't perceive the same effect or idea they are trying to display. If perfect steady shots were used it wouldn't create the authenticity  that a hand-held camera produces. This adheres the conventions of a thriller through keeping everything within theme of each other, so using a hand-held shot because it links heavily with the swaying and jerking of the boat within the storm.  In order to replace this they use more traditional methods that require interaction. This shows that the characters actually know each other and a tight unity within the ship, but they lacking attention to the water for where the body is, adding the build-up and tension of who shall found the body or will the body be found. This makes the audience question each characters judgement and there importance within the scene. Although, the medical kit on board the boat actually carries a scalpel, which would be seen more in someone who is professionally qualified in medicine, rather being on a boat. However, someone must have medical training as they are in the middle of the sea, with probably little communication so must be able to react fast in medical situations. But this also implies a very dangerous job or perhaps the film makers were too prepared for the scene by having specialized equipment. If I was to make the scene grittier I would perhaps use a homemade scalpel or used scalpel to add more drama and thriller like qualities to the scene. Lastly, the man who was laying in the water had scuba diving gear that portrays more of accident as the characters trip went wrong rather than him being there on purpose by someone else, tricky the audience a little to make it seem more like an accident. Finally, the weather that is portrayed within the scene is very dark, gloomy, foggy making it harder to completely see the vessel but also the idea of thunder and lightning builds more tension as well as creates a more suitable atmosphere for the scene. As if happy must was heard with blue skies and a body was found it would seem odd of the scene but, create more a psychopathic effect, a little more horror, rather than being the middle of the ocean where there is danger, as you can’t predict or see what is out to sea.

The Sound that is the essence of the scene is the dialogue that is exchanged between the crew members, as they are talking in another language. By allowing this it makes the audience pay very close attention as they wondering and questioning what they are talking about. Them talking in different language suggests that the director does not want the audience to understand what they are saying, adding mystery to the mix. Therefore, we cannot determine if they have motive or not, are they involved or are they the innocent party. it tells us that the protagonist is in a different country to what he is from, I can tell from his appearance that he is not from where they come from, questioning how did he get there? the boat men have much darker skin compared to the protagonist, indicating he is in a different country.  What they going to do to the body but there facial expressions are the key to understanding their reactions fully. However, the sound effects included in the seen represent thunder and lightning, creating the stormy atmosphere that is often shown in many thrillers. The idea of thunder and lightning creates tension, as it builds upon the idea of something dramatic shall take place. But also the idea of the inside of the boat being quiet calm and secluded, implies a contrast idea against the exterior of the boat. Therefore, the interior shall be more of a safe place compared to the natural cause of the weather. The pitch of the thunder and lightning is at a moderate level, implying that weather mustn’t dominate the scene but rather assist the scene. Meaning that the weather is a warning of what shall occur later in the scene. However, the synchronous sound that is also created from the thunder and lightning, portrays that the weather must match the scene in order to create a well-rounded collected scene. The sound implies from the thunder and lightning creates a small trail for the audience in order to be prepared for the journey that lies ahead. But the audience from the first scene know there is a body, however, by showing the weather this adds more worry upon the audience in sake of the character. Additionally, the ambient sound that is present in the scene is used through the essence of the pot being pushed, for which then leads to the pot falling from the table. This occurs when the crew are placing the found body onto the table. By incorporating this, it portrays the panic for the civilian that they have found face down the water. Overall, the sound within the scene often matches the objects that are present within the scene and continue to appear in the scene even when the characters are only visible to the viewers.

Additionally, the camera angles for which are displayed in the scene is a hand-held shot that is shown when one of the fisherman exits the main shelter of the boat with waste product ready to throw them into the sea. However, the hand-held shot is portrayed when the character is struggling to maintain balance on the boat. However, it is visible to see that the character is acting and the camera is being slightly moved In order to produce a replica effect of what would realistically happen if they were situated in the middle of the sea in a fishing boat. However, the effect for which this creates is the idealistic atmosphere that is needed for the life of fisherman. However, it enhances the idea of him lacking awareness of the bodies’ presence in the water. Therefore, when he notices the body this shows the surprise and lack of understanding of what he has seen. As we can make an assumption as we know a body is in the water but the audience cannot be certain of what the character has seen, creating suspension for the audience. As well as, his legs and lower bottom half are shown rather than it going straight onto his face to show the struggle of remaining balanced; but the camera also creates this idea to make it harder to distinguish the characters identity. However, once the object for which is a body has actually seen to be a body, the crew then begin to pull the body to safety to examine the body. Once the body has reached deck the crew then take the body and place the body upon the main feature of the room which is the table. However, as they place the character onto the table a tracking shot is displayed. With the use of the tracking shot it allows the character to be the main subject of the scene, and avoid any distraction occurring from the other characters within the scene although they remain to have some significance. As well as, remains the effect to the boat having movement when in fact they are not actually out at sea. Furthermore, flicking back to the beginning of the scene an extreme long shot is incorporated when an object can be seen floating upon the surface of the water but this allows the scene to be set at in the shot, the weather can be seen and heard, the waves hitting the object but it can be seen that the object is a boat but of what nature cannot be determined. As well as, the rapid movement of the object being guided by the weather and also the current. Lastly, the worm’s eye view shot from under the figure that is floating within the water portrays the idea of the shape of a body, allowing the audience to begin to question the film before it has even fully begun. The worm’s eye also portrays the figure to have higher importance or authority in the film or against the audience, implying that this object shall have the main significance in the scene. Overall, the shots suggest the shots lack full capture of the subject within each shot in order to contain and maintain suspense and each element being released slowly, showing subtle changes throughout to scene.

However, the editing that has been incorporated in the scene is flash cutting, this occurs when the crew bring the body from the top deck to the inside of the ship. This part isn’t shown; the reasoning is because there is no need to show this part as it doesn’t have much significance to the scene and would take the attention away from the body of the character. Flash cutting allows aspect of the scene to be purposely cut from the scene in order to look closely and critically at the main aspects of the scene rather than parts do not represent much in the story. The non-continuity editing also assists this by lacking to add each bit within the scene, creating the idea of what they want the audience to see rather seeing each part. They are only showing the parts that are essential to the scene. Another, effect of non-continuity editing is predicting what is actually happening in them cuts that are not shown to the audience, building tension and drama. As well as, creating different perspectives from each targeted audience personnel plus what they want the audience to see at that moment in time, they don't want to give the story line completely away. This symbolizes that they don't want to reveal what is actually truly happening yet. Lastly, the part of the editing that is hugely involved in creating this scene is CG I; this is incorporated through the shots that show the sea and the exterior of the boat. Therefore, this allows the setting to be correct with theme of the film being set out to sea. The CG I allows a realistic effect to be achieved, but in closer observation I can see that it is CG I from the movements of the materials but also it looks a little computerized. However, The CG I recreates what would be achieved if they were to go out to see. Overall, the editing within the seen actually brings the film together and allows the image to be produced somewhere that would be too dangerous to film, However, the CG I gives the film a more action thriller feel, but the edits add life and character to what some may say to be boring or typical of a film.

Conventions of a thriller

Inception:
However, at the beginning of the scene it is visible that the male character is trying to require something from a secure concealed object for which is a safe. While he is in the safe, he begins to change a brown envelope with an identical envelope, however while in the process to do so he is caught by the owner of the property who have his companion hostage. In order to get his companion back he was required to hand back the stolen envelope. However, the female character is holding a gun to the companions head, but the dominant male character is also holding a gun to the female for a distance. A discussion proceeds to allow the audience to find out that the scene is actually a dream rather than real life. Although the woman sees pain and suffering better than to shoot him in the head, so she shoots the character in the foot instead. The main male character then he slides his gun across the table and slowly walks closer to the other characters, grabs his gun and shooting his friend through the head. By doing this he wakes the character from the dream and the dominant character begins to run through the temple, while the guards and the ceiling of the temple begin to fall upon him. However, once he reaches the end of the temple the windows begin to concave on the character and water begins to pour quickly into the temple. While this is happening the scene flicks back and forth between real life and the dream, as in real life the male dominant character wont wake so they decide to ‘dunk’ the character is a bath of water while strapped to a wooden chair. In the processes the villain also begins to wake. The water in the temple relates closely to the water within the bath, they replicate each other. The information that is revealed lacks depth, and the only time really that the idea of this scene being a dream is leaked through the oriental man, when he says that he knows they are in a dream. However, we can distinguish that the main character is looking for confidential information as he rushes to open the envelope that over the text, in bold lettering says ’confidential’.

Towards the ending scene the audience are left with the character stood frozen as the water penetrates the glass of the windows as the water floods in. But also the moment where the male character is pushed hard into the bath of water, and the process is shown in slow-motion; the only sound that can be heard is the splashing water. The areas of which have been established is that fact that his in a dream and whilst in the dream he is trying to retrieve vital information. However, many questions can be raised for a variety factors including why do they need the information? What is in the concealed envelope? Why must he be in a dream to gain the information? Who are the characters and what is their purpose in the film? But also, other questions are alarmed of why is the temple beginning to concave? Where is the location and why is it used? The answers in which we need is most importantly what is envelope, as the film seems to be surrounded by the idea of secrecy and hidden factors that are hiding something that shouldn’t be hidden. However, another important question is why can it only be performed in a dream, is too risky if they don’t or is it riskier they do. The idea of a dream creates a sense of supernatural and sci-fi approach, and also adding an additional dimension, maybe using the dream as a metaphor that will be unravel as the film proceeds further. We just don’t know.

The sounds that begins is non-diegetic sound within the beginning scene, as the sound produced starts with a very low bass beat almost replicating a low trumpet sound that has been muffled out to give the sound an eerie quality. However, a sudden and sharp stop appears, although when the music is picked up again more of an electric vibe appears which I believe to be a single electric guitar being strung very softly. Therefore, this develops the depth of the tension and expands the idea that something exciting may happen. Furthermore, the gun fire is very much the opposite as the noise and the object are both very much seen; creating the realisation of the fact she shot him through the foot. The idea of having diegetic sound is to portray the character further, as a very dominating as she has more authority of the male character but also her attitude to provide more pain and suffer rather than shooting the man outright.  In addition, throughout synchronous sound allowed assistance for the movements of not only the dominant, leading character but also the surrounding. For example, when he was running against time through the crashing building, many stringed instruments assisted his fast pasted actions but also dropped in places where he may have paused and also when he sped up. This represents the beat acting on his movements, as well as replicating him in the form and structure of sound. Further, throughout when the sudden sharp drops occur, it builds up the tension and question the next action within the scene. Although, each set scene has itself own identity of music for which alternates between for which have the same character present in them scenes. Therefore, presenting sound motifs, this presents that the character within the running scene is likely to be in more danger, but also that these characters will have more importance as the whole film unfolds. In contrast, the lack of sound is also distinguished when the character is ‘dunked’ as the noise stops and the scene slows down , however, it is only when he hits the water that the sound for which is ambient sound,  is reintroduced back into the scene. Therefore, showing the impact against the water, but also silence creates tension too. Referring back to the beginning of the scene, the characters exchange in dialogue and the oriental man speak, “that you’re stealing for me or were actually asleep”. This then allows the storyline to be a lot clearer on what the scene is about , for which is a dream. This conversation takes place within the first minute, subverting the tradition of keeping the audience in suspense of what the film shall be about.

The mise-en scene is firstly presented with the setting and surroundings, as the scene is set in what I believe to be a very traditional and cultural temple with many intricate designs and details upon the walls. This idea of having a very exotic location adhere the thriller stereotype as it is very different to well-known surroundings but it also adds to the mystery and eeriness of what is wanted in a good, capturing thriller. However, the costumes and clothing that the characters are wearing seem to look very smart due to fact they are wearing suits which are more of a formal wear of dress. Although, the oriental man is wearing a very traditional garment beneath his suit, this implies that he still wants his Asian roots to be shown, but also wants to appeal smart. This could also suggest that he owns the property due to fitting evenly within the surrounding Asian features. Furthermore, the lighting that is present within the scene is very staged and artificial as there are no available windows for the lighting to actually get into the building. But, however the exterior of the property is very heavy and the lack of lighting makes the surroundings less visible, making it harder to see and making the audience have to pay particular attention to the scene in order to remain understanding. In addition, the body language exchanged between the characters is very firm and strong to remain the dominance that believes they have as well as power. The characters are trying to portray themselves as having a higher authority in order to outsmart each other, but also push fear into the faces of each other to produce intimidation.

The editing for which appeared the scene was a shot-reverse-shot; this is incorporated during the conversion between the characters at the beginning of the scene. Therefore, this allows the facial expression of the characters to be shown as well as their reactions towards the dialogue used. However, it also implies that the characters are aware of their opponent’s presents and maintain focus on the character to be fully prepared for the next movement they shall take, remaining fully aware. Additionally, a cut is presented whilst the dominant character is running through the temple; this shows the adjusting surroundings falling around and among the characters. However, the cut is also very fast displaying the action in the cut, as well as the character having a weapon and hunching his shoulder in order to have a little protection from the falling items. In contrast, the continuity editing that is visible in the scene is cutting back and forth between the man in the dream, and also the man trying to woken up outside of the dream. This allows the audience to maintain understanding of what is going on externally, but also internally. By having this edit, it creates a clear narrative and a clear distinction between what is real and what is literally in their imagination. Lastly, the finale piece of editing was slow motion; this appears when the male character is pushed into the bath of water. Therefore, this shows all the impact of the water clashing against the character and how hard the character is plunged into the water. However, this moment of slowness contrasts effectively against the fast, action pace of the other content within the scene.

The camera angles for which have been incorporated into the scene is an over-shoulder –shot in the safe at the stage when he was retrieving the envelope from the safe. The over-the-shoulder shot is used to actually show no identity as no face is seen of who the character is. Therefore, this creates more of suspense of who the character is and how significant they are to the scene, but also the film. By not showing his face to begin with creates the idea of him only being male due to the frame of his hands. However, a close up shot has been used when the companion of the main characters eyes are shown. This portrays his expressions but also the moment of him actually opening his eyes. Allowing the audience to know his awake and question the next steps of the character. Finally, the long shot that is visible outside of the dream in what seems to be a hotel room. By having this long shot, allows the surroundings to be shown very clearly: this allows the scene to be set and making it easily visible to the audience where the scene is. However, the circumstances present the pressure of what there doing causes.

The conventions and techniques in which I would like to incorporate into my own scene are the special effects in which they have used mainly in the crumbling building scene  as I find it creates an action to the thriller, giving the thriller character and something to stand out from other thrillers. The crumbling also suggests a professional feel and it is clear to see a great deal of money has been used to create this special effect. I like the idea of the crumbling reflecting the character waking up, allowing the realisation that this is all but just dream. The metaphor extends to show the creativity and thought that has been put into bring imagination and reality into one. Exploring real-life and the inner thoughts of the mind. I understand that in our opening to a thriller we won't be able to make something that is on such a large scale and that costs  lots of money as the budget we have is nothing or very little, but we could replicate the crumbling in the idea of mental disfigurement crumbling, in the sense of someones life falling apart around them. However, I feel that with little money it would pretty hard to get something near or similar. We could however use CGI or software programs to generate this effect. When the water enters the scene we could film in a local swimming pool and create the idea of the building being underwater. Then merging the two scenes in order to complete a similar effect, but on a more realistic scale and budget. The equipment they have used is clearly very advanced along with professionally trained staff that are at hand, making it a whole lot easier for them. In contrast, we could require investments from investors, meaning more budget to play with and create the scene to a similar quality to what is present.

Opening of a Thriller

Thriller is a very vast topic and genre of literature, television and film. Thrillers often produce a variety of moods, often heightened feelings of fear, tension, and dread, startled response and anticipation. There are many examples of thriller films such as, The Loft (2015), Psycho (1960), Black swan (2010), Rear window (1954) and I saw the devil (2010).These are just a selection but there are many more thriller available; but what really makes a good thriller. A good thriller is produced in many key areas but more specific areas must include low key lighting. This therefore produces a very dark and sinister mood within the thriller, but also adds a sense of secrecy for the characters to shield behind, bumping up the tension more. In contrast, the lighting should also have tones, yes darkness is important but also, adding glimpses of bright, harsh light contradicts the darkness. Additionally, the narrative of the thriller must also be instinctively recognizable, making it easier for the audience to follow and be gripped upon easily. However, some confusion at the beginning is great if it produces suspense, making the viewer eager to pay attention to want to watch more. The location is also essential in a scene as it creates a backdrop for the film but also makes it more distinctive of what the thriller is about. A location allows the audience to understand the concept of the thriller. Many openers to film present text, but if text is added to show the actors and producers names, it must be written in an appropriate text in order to remain within the theme. However, if bold, pink writing was used it would not successfully relate to the thriller genre like a dark grey, subtle font would.

However, the beginning scene in which I have selected to critically discuss is an opener to thriller called ‘Prisoners’. For which is based upon an abduction of two young girls in Pennsylvania, which leads to a manic search in order to save the girls in time. But, many twists and turns change the path along the way.

Many of the camera angles within the first two minutes of the scene are wide shots, over the shoulder and mid shots. The first shot within the scene is a wide shot of the location and a vehicle. Most of the surrounding lighting is through the windows of the location, for which reflect upon the edges of the vehicle making it harder to distinguish what type of car it is and this true purpose. Therefore, beginning the suspense of what is going to happen through the scene, but also the light and the dark foreshadows the genre and time period of the scene. The light and dark also display an even and effective contrast of good and bad scenarios that may take place. However, the camera then moves to the inside of location it begins with a mid-shot travelling slowly into an over the shoulder shot, this creates the idea of intrigue for the audience as they are unable to see the characters face and also question  the character in a spectrum of categories. It also creates a stereotypical idea of what should be among a thriller. When the male figure sits,  in the vehicle it begins with a mid-shot of the character side on and leads to an over-the-shoulder shot, for which is quite blurry making it unable to see the characters face properly, showing he may be planning something sinister on the radio. The mid-shot is full of available lighting but the over-the-shoulder shot lacks any type of lighting, foreshadowing light and shade in the character, therefore, he may not be a good or bad as the audience assume him to be. In addition, the over-the-shoulder shot of him transfers to another over-the-shoulder shot of another character. The darkness of the new character remains, displaying he is only bad rather than having any light to the character. But, also the characters face is unrecognizable, enhancing the idea of suspense. All of the shots throughout the whole scene are very long and extend further than a few seconds. This is very unusual for a film, but because it is a thriller genre, the scenes are extended to create more drama and suspense in the scene as it makes the audience expect thing to happen, when they don’t the audience is on their seat more, due to being clueless of what may take place where and when.

Furthermore, in the opener, sound bridge took place with the effect of rain as it expanded over to each scene to maintain and remain the dark, stormy night that is within the scene, adhering to the gloomy setting stereotype. This allows the audience to easily distinguish that something drastic and dramatic will take place at some point but the time period is unknown for when. Once the leading character is finished in the dining facilities he leaves, to walk back to his vehicle although when his making his journey, Non-diegetic and a voice over sound of a radio call can be heard for a female voice, letting the audience a little more clearer of who the character is by displaying his occupation of being a police officer. Although there is no indication of a uniform, stating he may be of a higher rank then a police officer and perhaps a detective from the dark, long jacket his is wearing, a stereotype of a detective, as well as some who is the rain. The sound from outside of the vehicle continues into the exterior of the vehicle from where the male figure responds to the call out. This implies that the call is towards him rather than anyone else as well as, making the scene more natural as if he was to be able to get the call the second he sat down it would be to  staged in the scene rather than a raw, natural feel seen in a day-to-day situation within the police force. Additionally, later on in the scene ambient sound is visible when he approaches the caravan. The track heard is very eerie as it replicates sounds of knifes being sharpened, and sharp, high-pitched frequencies; the noise becomes more intense as well as louder and clearer to the audiences ear. This type of music has been incorporated to heighten the mood of mystery and that someone dangerous or something dangerous is in the vehicle, remaining the idea of thriller and the fear of the unknown; what a thriller is primarily about. The assumptions in which we link to the idea of knifes is stabbing but a consist and manic approach of the noise increasing, creates a sense of lack of control and panic not in, just the audience but the person with the control over the knife. The effectiveness of this quality is putting the audience on edge and creating a sense of something is going to happen; a sense of the unknown.

The Mise-en-scene within the scene is the clothing of the main character, as it is very dark as his t-shirt is black and he is wearing jeans, which seem quite casual compared to what his job is. However, the assisting officers in the scene are very profession with wearing the correct uniform. Only then can I distinguish that he is actually a police officer. However, the props also assist this idea, as his holding a gun which within the United States are legalized with a license, making it more normal to be seen in the hand of any citizen, subverting the idea of him actually being a police officer. However, the radio used is some situations of the clip also predict his in the Police force, as not all industries actually use radios of that type, being placed within the vehicle. This adhere the traditional idea of communication with the police force, and linking back to him being an officer. In contrast, the setting throughout the scene is a very traditional concept of horrors or thrillers being dark, stormy and having some weather change; such as thunder, lighting or rain. This indicts a dramatic situation will withhold in the scene, but it also shows that it makes the character less visible to the audience, making them wonder who they are. It also adheres to the stereotype of a Thriller. Throughout the whole clip, little lighting was available and the available light used appeared mainly from the petrol station, suggesting a very public place, perhaps the suspect has no fear of being found or they haven’t committed an crime for them to be arrested for. The little light sources imply that the surrounding area is very urbanized, meaning not many live near and no much light is required due to the little amount of people in the area. On the other hand, the editing within the full clip is little to be seen as they have been very professional with the camera and wanted everything to be as authentic as possible. However, a shot-reverse-shot has been when the main character walk towards the vehicle and the man in the car is looking through the side mirror, the camera snaps back to the male officer. This shows that the suspect can see the officer, but he cannot make out his face completely. Adding to the idea of who is this man and why the officer is approaching the caravan. This also allows the man to understand that someone is walking towards him. Finally, at the beginning to the whole video, a jump-cut is used to observe the officer in his vehicle. For which implies that the audience must remain focus on him carefully, as he will have a huge involvement in the whole film, but also giving him the blame of him being the suspect, making the audience suspicious of everyone in the video. This adhere the idea of thriller, as each person may have involvement and causing confusion of who the enemy is.

Only artificial light available.
The technical elements that id feel were most effective were the ambient sound of the rain and the travelling over-the-shoulder shots. The sound of the rain added and enhanced the atmosphere within the whole scene. The rain adds the continuity to make something feel and replicate real life, such as the rain may only be not hear if inside but even then it maybe but softened. The idea of rain is used to create an atmosphere of darkness as well as, poor visibility, meaning more patience and attention is needed to understand the beginning of the film. However, the travelling over-the-shoulder shots created the idea of the unknown as at this point we are unaware of who is the offender and who is the cop. The travelling of the shot opens up the story line-unfolding elements in small cuts. The travelling of the shot also builds tension in the sense of  showing small segments that progress into something bigger and clear, allowing the audience to work out the film for themselves as well as, it being a clear indication that the persons identity is about to be revealed. From this I defiantly want to incorporate continuity as it keeps a clean and consistent feeling to the film, it also makes a great story line. Although, over-the-shoulder shots are good if it is not appropriate to what is needed then I feel that it wont work, so will be used if appropriate in what we get to achieving. In contrast, the aspects that I would experiment with is the sound as feel that dramatic bangs or pauses would climax the tension and increase the drama within the scene. They clearly have the money so perhaps more extreme versions of music would increase and heighten elements alongside the mood of the film.

What I hope to get out of studying Media Production

The term ‘media production’ refers to the process in which digital files are created, enhanced, encoded, and distributed using numerous methods of processing via computer hardware and software applications.  http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-digital-media-production.htmThe way in which I interpret media production includes exploring a variety of technology, which include cameras, software and hardware systems, in order to express a meaningful message through media which can include leaflets, posters, adverts, music and videos plus a large mass of other products. However, the products also must appeal to a vast amount of people, especially to the target audience required for the specific product. But to me media is something that is truly special; producing, adapting and distributing my own ideas to a worldwide audiences seems unbelievable and a real once in a life time opportunity, as well as allowing me to publicly express my artistic qualities.

The areas in which I am particularly interested in is creating props; It excites me to make something with a purpose, as well as having a hidden message and meaning, that will create a true impact to the audience. What people don’t understand that the true essence, base and structure, of a media production is behind the camera, not just in front. Props take time, skill and true dedication in order to really contribute to a professional outcome. Although, I am however also interested in filming and editing, as I like to get involved in the process, as well as having control on what actually is put into the film. I like to be able to vision what the public will see as a viewer. Their opinion is what truly matters at the end.

The skills and knowledge in which is have already grasped is not necessarily directly in media as I regret to say I didn’t take it at GCSE but from the other subjects i took I have actually been able to gain a variety of skills. One subject in particular is dance, due to the fact that I could be expressive within the movements I produce as well as allowing me to be great under pressure, as I had to learn dances in short spaces of time meaning the steps had to learnt, polished and meaningful. I do however take a huge interest within the media, as I take time to participate in reading magazines which look at current and global affairs as I find it exciting how quickly and suddenly the world can change in a matter of moments, leading to controversy around the world for weeks a one time. It amazes me how the public can react drastically to these current and global affairs. In addition, I also have very good leadership skills that were clasped when I was form captain, I was able to take a dominate and leading role of my form. I had to be organised in key events such as making own Christmas hamper for a shelter. I could however use this to my advantage of taking a leadership role when producing my own film opening if necessary. Lastly, I have much artistic skills as I participated in GCSE art as I am very creative and patient in taking time to produce a high quality image, this skill will work wonders if props need to be produced as I create effective props to enhance and assist in the quality of the film opening.

Additionally, the skills and knowledge in which i wish to grasp is being able to Film and edit confidently using a variety of software’s, this will enable me to use the sources available to me to my advantage. This will also prepare me for any future reference to software further on in the course. However, I also want to be able to create something that fits to a specific target audience, in order to make my work relevant to the public. This will allow me to create things that fit for true purpose rather than having no use to society. I want to create something that is entertaining, new and exciting and by having a purpose it allows me to do this. Finally, I want to learn a realistic idea of what it would take and how much work it would be, if I was actually to work in the media industry. Therefore, I will gain realistic experience and not just qualities, but specific qualities needed to produce, promote and distribute a piece, or pieces of work that are relevant for the project I would be on hand, dealing with
.

My ultimate aim for the course is to enhance and gain excellent understanding of media in all aspects, but especially in society, as well as the trends within media at the present time. I want to do this as media is something which is part of everyday life. Therefore it would be useful, not only if I was to proceed in a career in any aspect of the media, but also in everyday situations and scenarios. I want to understand media in all of its glory. However, my other major aim I wish to get in media is advertisement; I want to be able to not only create a fantastic and successful video, but how to also successfully advertise the video in order to gain and capture the attention of the audience, in which I want to reach out to. I want advertisement not to only assist my work, but to accompany alongside my work in equal ranking, as I believe this is just as important as the work itself. I want to learn how to create posters, trailers and leaflets that can describe my work without many spoken words.
